DIY Pool Leak Test
The Bucket Test: A Simple Way to Check for Pool Leaks
Want to determine if your pool’s water loss is due to a leak or natural evaporation? This simple 24-hour test can help you find out.
Step-by-Step Bucket Test Guide
1. Preparation
- Fill pool to normal level
- Fill bucket with pool water (leave 2.5cm from top)
- Turn off auto-fill systems
- Place bucket on pool step (submerge about 13cm)
Step 2: Mark Water Levels
- Mark water level inside bucket
- Mark pool water level outside bucket
- Ensure marks are clearly visible
If reading hasn’t changed: No pressurised system leak
If reading has changed: Continue to Step 3
Step 3: Wait and Compare
- Check levels exactly 24 hours later
- Compare both water levels
If the pool level drops the same as the bucket level = no leak
If the pool level drops more than the bucket level = potential leak
Calculate Water Loss
- Measure water drop in centimeters
- Multiply by pool surface area
- Example: 1cm drop in 8x4m pool = 320 litres lost
