Do You Have a Water Leak? Here’s How to Check

Is your water bill unusually high? A simple meter test can help determine if you’re losing water to a leak. This DIY test takes just 30 minutes and can be done without professional assistance.

Quick Meter Test Guide

1. Preparation

  • Ensure no water is used during the 30-minute test period
  • Locate your water meter (typically in a ground-level box near your property entrance)

Step 2: Testing Process

  • Record your current meter reading
  • Wait 30 minutes (no water usage)
  • Check meter again

If reading hasn’t changed: No pressurised system leak
If reading has changed: Continue to Step 3

Step 3: Isolate the Problem

  • Close all toilet inlet valves
  • Repeat the 30-minute test

If reading stops changing: Toilet leak identified
If reading continues changing: Professional inspection needed

Calculate Water Loss

  • Subtract initial reading from final reading
  • Result shows water loss in litres
  • Even small changes could indicate significant monthly losses
